A little pen and ink drawing, my entry in the Bostock and Pollitt 'One Tree' illustration competition. The brief was to create an image on the supplied template of a tree which has some sort of significance to you. Oh, and you have to create your illustration around the central number ‘1' they have positioned in the middle of the page. (Confused? Read the brief)
So here's my finished piece:

And the significance? When we first moved to the fish farm it was a pretty barren landscape, so we planted hundreds of tree and shrubs all over the farm. This tree is one that my dad and I planted in the dark one night. I'm still not sure why we just didn't wait till morning and daylight, perhaps we were keen to score it off the to-do list.
We couldn't really see where we were planting the little saplings (there were about 6), so we just blindly dug a few holes and popped them in. Despite being planted in the dark, we must have picked quite a good spot, because 20 years on, those trees are taller than our house!
If you have a special tree in your life (surely everyone does?) take a look at the competition details here.
