Tom Gyr Collaboration 6th Jul 2008

New Designer, Tom Gyr contacted me a few months ago with an interesting proposal. As part of of his degree show collection he has created furniture pieces with an interesting little twist...
Tom Gyr, who has recently graduated from Northumbria University in Design, draws upon a mixture of enthusiasm for material exploration with a passion for art, craft and design. He explores the boundaries between these disciplines within the limits of creating functional objects.
The Broken collection is a series of tables that celebrate the dilapidated. Tom used a variety of seemingly damaged materials, including rusty steel, crazed concrete, shattered glass, coffee stained wood and a wine stained linen table cloth. The preconceived notion that these features deem a product undesirable are challenged when, on closer inspection, the rust and the crazing on metal and concrete tables create the image of an intricate floral pattern designed by Elle Decoration award winning illustrator Johanna Basford. The illusion of the coffee stained wood is infact inlayed walnut, creating the image of a shoal of fish, the shattered glass is in the form of a delicate dandelion and the wine stain has been embroidered into the cloth to form the silhouette of japanese ink inspired flower.
