Furniture designer Tom Gyr, has been busy in the workshop since he graduated this summer and I was delighted when he sent through the first images of a new collaboration project we've been working on.
Along with his business partner, Alexander Underwood, Tom has established Cut Design. In collaboration with an illustrator, they create simple, functional furniture and products to which the illustrator's work can then be applied. They experiment with materials, creating unique and often stunning surface patterns, working with a combination of cutting edge technology and established artisan production techniques.
I love their design manifesto of combining slick three dimensional design with decorative surface pattern, unlike many product designers who seem to use pattern as an afterthought, the Cut boys are taking a more holistic approach and working with the artwork from the outset, ultimately creating products where both form and pattern compliment each other on equal terms.
Their first product is the CutClockMirror, featuring my Cuckoo Clock artwork. The artwork is silk screen printed by hand onto toughened glass and uses a precision German quartz movement.
Back in the spring, I worked with Tom on his table collection.
