Happy Birthday DCA!     18th Mar 2009

Happy Birthday DCA!

On Saturday the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre celebrates its 10th anniversary, kicking off proceedings with the private view of the Associates exhibition tomorrow night from 7pm.

The jewel in the City of Discovery's crown has to be the DCA; brilliant exhibitions, a fantastic Print Studio, an arty little cinema, delicious restaurant, a shop stuffed full of "I want that in my life" goodies and a fantastic live music and cocktails venue - it manages to mesh a commercial public space with providing leading gallery shows, workshops, talks and conferences. The Lighthouse in Glasgow could learn a lot.

To mark the success of the last decade, (10 years ago I was studying for my Standard Grades!) the DCA is holding a Birthday Open Day, including free talks, demonstrations, events, children's workshops , behind the scenes tours and cinema screenings. So if you fancy having a snoop around the cinema projection room, or getting to grips with Photograms in the dark room, have a peek at the list of freebie events they are hosting here.

They have selected 2 great films from '99 to screen in the cinema, The Matrix and Seul Contre Tous, to celebrate the year of the grand opening, again completely free. Morphius for free I hear you ask? Yes!

And finally, The Associates exhibition opens 10 years to the day the DCA first opened its doors (or at least confused people by sliding to the side). Showcasing work by 10 of the most talented artists to emerge from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the last decade; Steven Cairns, Raydale Dower, Katy Dove, Luke Fowler, Fiona Jardine, Kevin Hutcheson, Graham Little, Lucy McKenzie, Duncan Marquiss, The Lonely Piper , Alan Michael, Ellen Munro, Scott Myles, Robert Orchardson, Clare Stephenson, Stephen Sutcliffe and Andy Wake.

The only thing missing is the jelly and ice cream.
