On my desk you can see the beginnings of a few new designs to be launched at Indigo in Paris. Each design begins as a detailed pen and ink drawing, sometimes taking up to 2 days to complete. Working this way goes against the grain of industry standard practice. Highly commercial studios work to a “time is money” mantra, forcing their designers to literally churn out designs as quickly as possible. This need for speed strips creativity, and what is left is fundamentally a manufacturing process. With little or no room for creative development, innovative risk taking and whimsical flights of fantasy. Every industry has its buzzwords. Where would the Gourmets be without "Organic" for example? In an age where we are acutely aware of the melting ice caps, diminishing forests and ballooning toxic emissions, is "Sustainable" just another fleeting example of a term banded about to create marketing hype; an in-vogue piece of diction used as an accessory to contemporize?
